Sin defined

Sin Defined

Attention: This isn't about a long list of sins, which I'm sure even non believers can write out. The purpose of this blog is to help you to understand what sin really is. I will provide a short list though.

First thing first, let's get this clear.. no matter who you are, you are a sinner (Romans 3:23). I know, it's heartbreaking, but there is good news too- some of you may already know the Good News! So, if you are a human, you have fallen short of the glory of God. We (humankind) all have. We can't say he's a sinner and she's a sinner without saying, I'm a sinner.

Second, if you say you have fellowship/relationship with God and still live in sin, you are a liar, a hypocrite! Those aren't the words of a mere human being. They were inspired by God Himself. "So if we say we have fellowship with God, but we continue living in darkness, we are liars and do not follow the truth." (1 John 1:6 NCV)

So now that those two truths about sin are out the way, let's define what sin is. Sin is darkness- the same darkness mentioned in 1 John 1:6. The verse right before this verse (1 John 1:5) explains that "God is light, and in Him, there is no darkness AT ALL. This darkness refers to things that are not of God. We refer to these things as evil. Because sin is darkness, then if you PRACTICE sin, then you are not of God. The reality is SIN SEPARATES  YOU FROM GOD. Sin has no part in God.

(For the sake of simplicity, I won't go deep into this next point because it needs it own post) The next thing that you must realize about sin is that there is a spiritual side of sin. This is where many people get lost. Many don't realize what sin is doing to them spiritually. Again, sin separates you from God. Let's go back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told them they would die- yet, he kicked them out and they were still alive. So why didn't they die? THEY DID DIE- SPIRITUALLY! Physically (flesh), they were alive though. Nowadays, we have many spiritually dead people because people love their sin and choose to stay in darkness.

WHEN YOU ARE IN SIN, YOU CANNOT HAVE FELLOWSHIP/RELATIONSHIP with God. The flesh and Spirit war against one another. Walk in the Spirit so that you don't fulfill the lust of the flesh (sin)- Galatians 5:16

The Good News! Jesus came to save us from sin. We have grace to overcome sin. Where sin abounds, grace much more abounds. We must use this grace to constantly overcome sin. The Holy Spirit will help you- lead & guide you into all truth. Jesus restores and renews our fellowship/relationship with God the Father so that we may walk in light.

Here's that list of sin that was promised: (know how to identify what is sin)- Romans 1:18-31, Galatians 5:19-21)

-making images of God
-lust in your heart
-women having relations with women and men with men

This is just a few mentioned from the passages mentioned above. Check out those passages for yourself. I pray that God would open your spiritual eyes, give you spiritual wisdom, knowledge and understanding of sin so you many recognize it for what it is, and also give you a hunger and thirst for His righteousness. In Jesus name. Amen.

P.S. The opposite of sin is righteousness.

Stay tuned for more on how to live righteously and overcoming sin.
